Guard Card Training Guidelines Security guards are employed by licensed private patrol operators to protect persons or property and prevent theft.

To be eligible to apply for a security guard registration, you must:
Be at least 18 years old.
Undergo a criminal history background check through the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Complete a 40-hour course of required training.

The training and exam administered by any private patrol operator or by a certified training facility. Effective July 1, 2004, all security guard applicants must complete a total of 40 hours of training instead of the 3 hours formerly required.

The 40-Hour Security Guard Training breaks down as follows: 1.Before submitting your security guard application, you must complete an eight (8) hour “Power to Arrest” training course and pass an examination. 2.Complete 16 hours of required security guard training within the first 30 days of the issuance of your security guard registration. 3.Complete an additional 16 hours of required security guard training within the first six (6) months of the issuance of the security guard registration.

You may start working as a security officer after an eight hour course and receiving your guard card. You will have 30 days to complete your first sixteen hours of training and then within six months after getting your Security Guard card to complete the remaining sixteen hours for a total of forty. You may elect to take all forty hours of Security Guard card training at one time also. Prior to renewal of your Security Guard card after January 1, 2005 you must complete an eight hour refresher course four(4) hours of which will be a mandated course set by the state and a four (4) hours of an elective.

Step 2
Live Scan Fingerprinting
In addition to taking the Security Guard Card Training Class, you will also need to have Live Scan fingerprinting done. On-Site Live Scan Fingerprinting Fees with DOJ and FBI

Step 3
Guard Card Application
The final step is to submit an application with fees to the State. The Bureau of Security Application fee is $51.00. This is the State fee.
